Pungoteague Creek Light

Constructed in 1854 at the entrance to Pungoteague Creek the screw- pile light was the first of its kind to be constructed on the Chesapeake Bay.  It also had the shortest lifespan of any lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay at just 459 days of operation when it was overturned by ice floes in 1856.  The light used a fifth order fresnel lens the lens was 21.3" in height, 7-4" in width and weighed 265 pounds.
